I’m usually not one to brag but I could see this result coming. As I said in my preview of this game we’re the type of team that would help Brisbane back to winning ways, and look what happened! Despite going a goal up early in the game (well done Harry) we’re incapable of defending a lead, as has been the case for much of this season.
When we faced Brisbane in Melbourne back in week five the team put in the performance of their life. They absorbed the pressure and were able to keep the Roar at bay for much of the game. That type of commitment was nowhere to be seen last night though as we left huge gaps in the defence and allowed Brisbane to run riot in the second half. I don’t understand why we didn’t approach this game with the same mentality as before, especially away from home. Our defending was atrocious and there was just no desperation at all.
You could tell that Ange Postecoglu had Victory in his sights long before the game kicked off. His team were fully prepared and knew exactly how to exploit our weaknesses. Durakovic on the other hand approached the game in the wrong manner and was punished for it.
On a positive note it was good to see Durakovic being honest for once. In the post-match press conference he said:
We have to lift. It’s two on the trot we’ve lost… We’re getting to the desperate stakes now. We can’t keep saying next week, next week.
It’s over the half way mark and we need to start collecting points because the end of the year will come soon.
I think he means the end of the season will come soon. Obviously the end of the year was merely hours away when he made these comments. Anyways….
We need to be realistic. Our chances of making the Finals are looking pretty slim and for that to happen we’ll need to see a huge turnaround. I just can’t see it. Even if we do though, whats the point? No team has ever won the Championship outside the top two and this Melbourne Victory team surely isn’t going to be the first to change that. If you finish fifth or sixth your just making up the numbers, thats the truth.
I could quite easily go on and on, pointing out everything thats wrong with the Club at the moment but I think I’ve done that enough already in recent weeks. I’ll leave you to enjoy this fantastic Melbourne weather. We have Central Coast away as soon as this Wednesday and then back at AAMI Park on Saturday against Newcastle. Fun times.
Oh and by the way, Happy New Year!

Melbourne Victory News 24/7

We have now lost 7 leads this season (after baing one or two goals up) out of 13 matches.
‘
Playing away at Central Coast (league leaders) next week will likely prove to be another faliure.
‘
I unusually have nothing more to say.
Yep. What more can you say? Its just the same thing every week now. I’m starting to sound like a broken record haha!
Hey VB, a Happy New Year to you, but I gotta say after last nights game the champers is flat and the sparklers wouldn’t light.
I wish we were entering 2012 with the enthusiasm associated with a winning team, looking forward to the back half of the season and Finals to come.
Alas due to the boards ineptitude in grabbing a coach from the bottom of the bargain bin at Dimmy’s, all we can look forward to is more of the same; more of ‘mumbling Mehm’ telling us we need to start “puddin da ball in da back uda net” and “we shouda scored two or three if we’d just hada biddu luck”. Talk about fingernails down the blackboard!
Oh and by the way, it was Roddy V who said those honest words you spoke of.
Personally I think he may have been saying “we can’t keep saying next week, next week” as much to Durakovic as he was to the media.
There really seems to be some sort of festering discord in the dressing room. Carlos is clearly not a happy camper and what the hell has happened to Solorzano? Why is this proven goalscorer treated as surplus goods? Instead we get our weekly substitute serving of the hard-running but totally ineffective Allsopp (sorry Danny we still love you but it’s time old buddy).
However trying to put the finger on any one key as to why these seemingly winnable games keep turning to s#*t, well it’s all a bit of a muddle. Here we have a team that can be electrifying for short patches, usually in the first 15-20 minutes but then either tactically, motivationally or though a lack of fitness we start making mistakes, giving up cheap possession and shipping goals.
The only reason we are not totally down the toilet (yet) is due to Arch, Harry, Carlos and Ante, but last time I checked 4 payer teams don’t win games let alone championships. And whilst it’s true a few of the other boys battle hard and show some skill, guile and determination, they are never the same players from week to week. Look at Celeski, plays like a champ one week and then just quickly re-discovers his inner-crap-player the next. Oh and then there are the passengers. Lets face it, if it were Big Brother Leigh Broxham would have been voted out in week 1 (although personally I would have been pulling for a Broxham / Cernak double-eviction).
Nuff said, I’m off to clean up last night’s mess and try to get the red wine stains off the carpet (courtesy of a Heartless supporter – only one there who had a good time little p%@ck!)
Cheers mate. Thanks for taking the time to post. Love the passion!
