Despite the loss last night the Melbourne Derby at AAMI Park was a great spectacle for Australian football. What an occasion to have two rivals battle it out on the pitch, while off it the fans get to celebrate the festive season supporting their team. One of the bonuses of the A-League being scheduled in the summer is that we get to watch live football at this time of year. People are on holidays, getting into the festive spirit and are more likely to get out and about and attend sporting events, which was evident at the game last night.
As Melbournians we love our sport and during the Christmas period the A-League really has a chance to shine. I think we should take advantage of this and have a Melbourne Derby fixture during Christmas week every year. If it was to become an annual event I think the 23rd of December is perfect – and it would have to be held at AAMI Park, of course.
