I’m usually not one to brag but I said it time and time again during pre-season. Mehmet Durakovic’s lack of experience is a real concern. Now, seven weeks into the new season we’re seeing the results of that. Admittedly, if we wanted Harry Kewell we had to settle for a manager who would demand less cash. Durakovic was that cheaper option but while we’ve saved money, in return its cost us dearly in competition points.
Could we have possibly gotten someone with a bit more experience for about the same amount of money? Possibly. With supposedly over seventy applicants for the vacant position I doubt many of them would have been as unseasoned as Durakovic, but the former Youth coach was the easy option. Mehmet was available at the right price, he knew most of the players and had done fairly well in his Asian Champions League stint.
For many people he had done enough in the ACL to warrant a chance to prove himself in the A-League. While I do agree we looked much better after he took over I think a lot of that came down to the fact that it was just something different. As we all know things were growing stale under Ernie Merrick and the introduction of Durakovic acted as the breath of fresh air that was so desperately needed at the time. Its not uncommon in football for a team to lift when a new manager is brought in but the euphoria of that never lasts for long.
There are a lot of reasons why we’re in the position we’re in. As I wrote about in this blog the management of the playing squad has been poorly handled and we’re paying the price for that. Despite those issues though Durakovic still has a pretty decent team at his disposal yet he’s been unable to get them to click.
Poor results aside, we’re not even playing half-decent football. Although Mehmet’s desired playing style is an ambitious one we haven’t seen any evidence of the team even trying to play that way. We may not have the midfield capable of executing the possession game but Mehmet’s line-up and formation choices don’t lend themselves to that particular style anyway.
I’ve said before that the players themselves have to take some of the blame as well for our poor form this season but it always comes back to the coach. After all, he’s the one calling the shots. Individuals may play badly but if the coach is getting his tactics wrong he’s not giving his players every chance of success. Yesterday’s draw with Perth was proof of that. We failed to take advantage of the extra man on the pitch and let the opposition back into the game. When your 2-0 up against ten men, especially at home, you should never lose your lead.
Mehm’s inexperience is also showing off the pitch. His post-match press conferences are becoming all too predictable and full of cliche’s. I’m sick of hearing his excuses every week.
We need to get that momentum going and the consistency. Once we get that, we’ll be alright. I am concerned. We just need to get the three points at home.
I’m really positive that once we get all the players back and we get a bit of luck, we’ll start getting results.
We’ve heard it all before. “Once this happens”, “once that happens”. How long do we have to wait? Its not a question of luck or the players we have available on match day, its the system itself. Its just not working. The sooner Durakovic admits that the better. But to be honest, I don’t think he has the capacity to see that. This is the best Mehm can do and its nowhere near A-League level.
The big question is what will the Board do about it? I can’t see them openly admitting they made a mistake and I don’t think they have the guts to call time on Mehmet’s tenure. Not yet anyway. Even if they did they’d probably just replace him with Kevin Muscat which would be completely pointless. If Durakovic is deemed too inexperienced then why replace him with someone equally unqualified? A great player he may have been but its still very early days in his coaching career.
The way we’re going at the moment, we won’t make the Finals, its as simple as that. Something must change. The next five weeks will define our season. If improvements aren’t made, both in terms of results and performances we can kiss this season goodbye.

Melbourne Victory News 24/7

All I have to say is FFS.
Dropping two goals (and two points) in the last 15 minutes, and especially against 10 men, is absolutely unacceptable.
The players played just as poor a performance as the coach. Poor, poor, poor!
Us Victory fans (this is my 5th year as a member) spend hours every week end travelling to the games and reading the team news, yet they put in little effort, especially from Danny and Fabio and our two “has-beens” Celeski and Pondeljak. I can’t fathem why they are still apart of the squad.
I want a completely new line up:
Covic / Foschini, Leijer, Vargas, Franjic / Rojas, Ferreira, Hernandez, Kewell / Solorzano, Thompson /
I’m no coach, but all it takes is common sense to play the faster, stronger, younger and more eager players to win titles. Not a tem full of golden oldies who can bearly run on the pitch.
Agree with many of your observations and comments, however this statement needs explanation: “Admittedly, if we wanted Harry Kewell we had to settle for a manager who would demand less cash.”
As far as I know – and it has been reported extensively and never contradicted – Harry Kewell is being paid the minimum wage by MVFC.
If you can provide evidence to the contrary, I’ll apologise immediately for my mistake.
I agree Durakovic seemed an odd choice given his unremarkable CV, but with 20 games to play we are 3 points behind 2nd spot.
Most football clubs in the world will be happy to settle for such “a crisis”.
Our position on the table doesn’t necessarily show how poorly we’ve been playing and that’s more worrying than how many points we’ve picked up. If we keep this up though the top four will be out of reach.
As for Kewell’s contract, the details are unclear but I doubt he’s on minimum wage! He is payed outside the cap after all.
With 20 matches to play, it’s ridiculous to be making any big conclusions about how the season will end.
So, you admit you don’t know for sure the details of Kewell’s contract but you still published that comment.
Why? Why would you not do further research before publishing, or at least tell the readers that you are making it up?
I can point to numerous publications, which state Harry is being paid the minimum player wage by MVFC.
The specific details of the contract aren’t public knowledge but by all means, include links to those articles your referring to.
As I am aware, based on radio/television news, articles and rumors from friends of friends who are involved with the club, Harry is here on a contract that has no exact dollar value.
:
His salary will be based on an average income with major bonus’ for club achievements (goals/assists) and he would also receive a percentage of the predicated increase in profits for Melbourne Victory for the season(s).
:
It has been estimated (also taking into account the many increases in salary) that Harry Kewell will be recieving between 2 to 2.5 MILLION DOLLARS OVER THE 27 GAME SEASON.
:
Therefor, Harry is DEFINITELY NOT receiving a minimum wage, considering that it could be the highest for any sports code in Australia’s history. This does not even take into account the the house that “he” purchased in Brighton (http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/the-brighton-mansion-believed-to-be-melbourne-victory-star-harry-kewells-new-home/story-e6frf7jo-1226199203843), which it is unlikely that it came out of his pocket considering that he felt hard-pressed to move to Australia to play football. In fact, you would probably only see these types of deals for a player of his age in the top European football countries, the oil-rich Arabic countries and maybe from North America.
:
SO FAR HARRY HAS FLOPPED SINCE HARRY’S PERFORMANCE ≠ SALARY.

The A-league ladder is deceiving. Its like saying the bottom team is 3 games from top spot, so he does have a point. Its not the ladder position. Its the fact that Victory have become extremely boring to watch. Their shift from a counter attack mentality to something resembling a manager who is trying to play it safe for as long as he possibly can to hide his short comings, is slowign being exposed.
I, too, have spoken to people involved with MVFC and they have indicated H is paid the “PFA minimum wage” PLUS incentives based on a formula that captures increased revenue (gate, membership, merchandise).
So, MVFC only pays Harry extra if MVFC receives extra.
This is just one of many articles that have been written on the subject: http://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/soccer/middle-east-clubs-woo-harry-kewell/story-e6frfg8x-1226114075594
If the CEOs & executives of publicly listed ASX companies had the same incentive-based remuneration package the world would, most likely, not be in the current economic mess.
There is nothing more “honest” than receiving a wage that is directly linked to the additional revenue you generate.
As an MVFC season-ticket holder I consider H playing for MVFC to be the best thing to happen to the club – other than winning the double twice.
Fair enough. But Harry will still get a ton of money
