Over the last six years we’ve seen some bad performances from Melbourne Victory from time to time, some quite bad indeed. None of them though were as horrendous as the shit we served up last night (to put it bluntly). Whatever it was, it barely resembled football.
We just couldn’t do anything right. It was as though we’d completely forgotten how to play. Like our players had been recruited from a dodgy Sunday League. Football basics had been thrown out the window.
Every time we got the ball we’d already lost it barely a minute later, after we’d played ourselves into a tight corner or failed to execute a simple ten yard pass. Now of course, occasionally you get crap games in football and sometimes players have bad days, but some of the “skills” on show last night were just pathetic. These players are professionals. They train almost every day. How they can manage to look like they’d never played a game in their life? When your already looking disjointed as a team, poor individual performances certainly don’t help.
The blame isn’t solely on the players though as its the coach who tells them how to play. You have to wonder what it is exactly that Mehmet Durakovic is instructing his players to do. In the post-match press conference he said:
We’ll work on the training pitch and as soon as we can get this structure right there’ll be no stopping us going forward.
We just need to get this system and structure right. We’ve got the players to put the ball in the back of the net and the sooner we do that the better.
And when will that be Mehmet? Does he realise that the season has actually started? We’re playing for points here. Now is not the time for experimentation. He’s had a full pre-season with the players and he still can’t decide on the starting eleven. He still doesn’t know what that structure is or how to best utilize the players at his disposal. Stop saying how good the team will be, because at the moment they’re not getting anywhere. Three weeks into the season and there has been no progress whatsoever.
I hate to sound all negative but this is just the reality of the situation. I’m not going to sit here though and say that Mehmet should be sacked immediately. Many have already said that they think he’s out of his depth, but I think its too early to make that call. Although, the doubts I had over his lack of experience when he was appointed are now justified.
The telling factor will be how Mehmet responds to the situation. If he can’t pull this team together and start producing the results that the Board expects then his days may be numbered. What a huge test the next couple of weeks will be. Wellington away – never an easy trip – and then Brisbane at home. If we play like we did last night, Brisbane will tear us apart.
So, what’s the solution then? For starters, we need to get some sort of a midfield going. Its been non-existent so far. We really struggled in transitioning from defence to attack. Playing two DM’s may be a safer option in terms of providing cover for the back four but its not doing us any favours when we have possession of the ball – especially considering Brebner and Broxham are way too similar. We need more creativity in the middle of the park but lack of options and quality in this area is really hurting us.
We may have only conceded one goal so far but we haven’t scored any either. What have we got to lose by playing one DM and a central midfielder? The question is though, who do we play in the middle? Well, thats open for debate. Up front, I think its about time that Solorzano is given a spot in the starting lineup. Its clear that we’ve looked a better side with him on the park. But then do you play Thompson out wide? I think he’s better utilized up front, but then you compromise a spot in midfield. Good thing I’m not being payed to coach the team.
At the end of the day, Durakovic and the players themselves need to take a step back and reassess things. A lot of expectation has been placed on this team but they must realise that nothing comes easy. They will have to work a lot harder for each other and for the shirt.

Melbourne Victory News 24/7

The excuse of fitting new player in wears pretty thin – Postecoglou lost five players including his striking line up -some coaches know how to get a machine running – it seems obvious from Memhet’s comments when Victory manages to fluke a goal – thats the system we’re going to play – its called gelling apparently??? Meanwhile Brisbane will be trying to decide who scores the next goal – our pre season wasn’t exactly inspiring with a loss to a burbs team – yeaks!
When you look at the bench mark – Brisbane and compare to the display last night, I can see a sorry, wasted season ahead. Anything the board will do will have little affect on things because once Mem goes Muscat will likely be put in charge temporarily and then hold onto the spot. Club legend he is – I have no faith he would be any better.
I think you said it straight on his inexperience. Its fair to be given a chance, but from the first interview he had on The World Game, he looked and spoke like a guy who had no confidence and any idea outside of his own bubble. I thought I had gone back in time 10 years and it was a preview for the NSL season.
Im calling it out of his depth and the next three games will show if Im just a lounge chair critic (actually I am) and if he has what it takes. Ill be surprised if results change and also if the formation changes.
Paul hit the target about if we sneak in a goal here or there. Mem will play this to the fullest to save his ass, not the clubs season.
So many issues though: Kewell’s fitness and positioning, clearly not enjoying himself out there as other teams know they can keep pace with him and just shadow him constantly. Alsopp missing in action and nothing from the club about it. The formations, the rubbish trick passes, not playing two up front. And sadly each game they have played progressively worse. It seems like a team that is uncomfortable playing a system they know from the outset will not work.
Thank god for Covic. I thought he would be a good signing but he has done more than play his heart out. He is saving the season for us supporters at the moment.
Good write up btw.
Thanks for reading guys and for your comments. Well said too, Matt. It’s all up hill from here and something drastic needs to happen to turn our season around before it’s too late.
Mehm doesn’t fill me with any confidence whatsoever at the moment and I’m really worried that we won’t be able to reach the level required to challenge the likes of Brisbane. Panic stations.
I think a couple of things are clear.
1. We have two of the best midfielders going around: Hernandez has proved himself over and over in the A league, and Kewell is arguably one of Australia’s best ever. Let’s get them both starting in the midfield – Hernandez centrally and Kewell to the left, positions where both are proven and comfortable.
2. The best game for Melbourne in terms of attack so far in this (admittedly short) season has been against Sydney. We didn’t score of course, but we had a lot of good chances. And what was the key to that game? Allsopp up front. I think we need to consider the fact that it might be time for Archie to take a break and come on from the bench with Danny starting in his place. I know it seems that Victory have pushed Allsopp aside, but he’s still on our books and not too late to get going.
So my thoughts would be:
Allsopp and Solorzano up front.
Kewell, Hernandez in midfield, supported by some combination of Rojas, Cernak (not happy with his game on Saturday but prepared to give him some more chances) and Ferreira. (Broxham and Brebner need some time to rethink their work.)
Franjic, Fosschini, Leijer and Fabio at the back. (Vargas is intermittent and relies too much of heavy handed tactics.)
Agree that we need to just go for it with Harry on the left and Carlos in the middle.
The reason we looked half decent against Sydney though was because Kewell actually played ok. Allsopp did nothing in that game.
Might be starting to see the problems of a club signing players rather than a manager. After Merrick was shown the door and the long search for a manager was on, we were still signing players, based on reputation and not on a position within the team.
Not sure how many more matches Rojas should start. He is a promising young player, and needs game time, but he isn’t taking the team option as much, in favour of trying to dribble past players.
I’m a fan of Cernak, he had a great ACL appearance, but he was well below par Saturday night. There is a lot of upside to the team, but it might be a while until we start seeing it.
The problem is too many inflexible players who have flaws to their game.
Hernandez won’t track back defensively. Neither does Kewell or Archie. Rojas perhaps too.
Cernak has great ball control, but his passing skills aren’t up to scratch.
Broxham & Brebner were too conservative – not willign to link defenders & midfielders. Maybe they were protecting the defenders more then normal without Leijer there, but they have to link up. Broxhams runs forward in the first half were laughable.
No balance between width on the pitch and playing it throught he middle, and no balance between playing the ball around and route 1 football.
After Kewells performance on Saturday where his body language and contribution were awful, I’d be temped to start him on the bench. That won’t be allowed to happen – which is a major issue.
Return to 442, Archie & Solzarno up front. Hernandez in behind them. Rojas & Kewell on wings. Brebner the single DM. Dare I suggest Celeski to perform a link up midfield role – which he has done in the past, although I recognise his limitations.
I agree on certain players not tracking back, especially Rojas. The kids got talent but he’s so lazy.
The overall attitude of the players has been poor too. I don’t think Mehm’s calm demeanor is helping that either.
You only have to look at the faces of the players and some of the guardedly seething comments they are making to see the this is not a happy change-room.
In a public sense, Mehm has trouble expressing any sort of a sound analysis as to what is going wrong and how he will set about fixing it (and droning on and on about “once we put da ball in da back a da net, everyfin will be OK”, does not constitute sound analysis).
Clearly Musky will be having plenty to say to the team but he is not the coach and therein might be the biggest of Mehm’s problems.
Honestly he seems like a really nice, simple guy. Unfortunately people like that don’t make very good professional football coaches.
Honestly, what is Durakovic doing? Like you stated, it is already 3 weeks into the season and he is still working out the starting XI. I really can’t beleive that he is playing the same style of rubbish football that no longer works in the world of football – long pass (or I think it was. It was so horrible I could not even tell what he was trying to do). It is partially the reason we saked Ernie Merrick for his stupid tactics and awful team set-up. A team needs to be flexible to change with the ages and Victory just can’t seem to do that.
In my opinion, we should start with Solorzano and Archie Thompson playing together up front with Rojas and Kewell and the left and right wings respectively. Hernandez then can play behind the two strikers where he is best suited. Harry Kewell needs to face the facts and put in 100% effort. Just because he is Australia’s largest historical footballing icon, it does not mean that whatever happens for him at the Victory will be accepted by the fans. The is not a universal support for the Australia national football team anymore, this is club football where his presence should influence results and not jersey sales. I don’t even know why Danny Allsopp is still st the Victory. He is literately the flop of the millenium (enough time wasted on him).
The bottom line is that we (us Victory fans) don’t care about poor team chemistry and managment issues. Sure, I love Victory more than most things in my life, but we will be a laughing stock if we cannot acheive success with players including, Kewell, Rojas, Solorzano, Archie, Hernandez, Leijher. We pay good money and spend countless hours travelling to and from football matches and searching up results/statistics on the inernet, and all really want to do is wake up the next morning and say that WE WON!!!
Could it be that much to ask from the richest and by far the biggest football club in Austrtalia’s history?
To add with Rusty, I also believe that Durakovic doesn’t have what it takes to manage a great club as MV. The problem is Mehmet’s personality. Simply, he seems unable to command the obedience and loyalty of his players ie falls to player power. Actually this was made evident by the Archie Thompson case as exactly as the latter lamented in the media that he is unhappy with his new role, Durakovic immediately shifted Thompson back to center forward. What’s even worse is that then Durakovic opted for the long ball tactic. Even a fan with the slightest knowledge of football would know that the long ball tactic requires a strong center forward (that is any other forward than our diminutive Archie!) to lead the line. Allsopp, although technically limited would do wonders in such a case.
What I don’t agree with is the proposed diamond-shaped midfield as I believe that MV would still suffer. This is because given that Rojas, Kewell and Hernandez won’t track back (as Andrew said), the holding midfielder would be unable to close down the opponents by himself and thus when taking into account everything, it means that the midfield battle would already be lost before the match even kicks off. Therefore, I would go for a 2DMs midfield in the form of Ferriera/Brebner and Broxham and let Kewell and Rojas do the damage on the flanks.
In a few words a simple yet effective 4-4-2 which focuses on the flanks. I believe that only so would unleash our potential as undoubtedly our greatest assets are on the wings. Fabio, who is great going forward, may also develop a Carney-McKay combo with Kewell. However, on the other side, things could work out less as both Rojas and Foschini are inexperienced but it’s worth to give a try. Up front Allsopp partnered by either Archie or Solorzano.
On a final note, another reason why Durakovic should scrap his formation is that we Aussie fans enjoy direct-full-of-action football (provided by the 4-4-2) and not the slow-tempo-sexy-football that he is maybe trying to implement with his 4-2-3-1.
