Melbourne 2 Sydney 2
Semi Final, 2nd Leg
March 7, 2010
Its not long now until the new season kicks off as the countdown reaches number 2! Todays classic match was one that had me on the edge of my seat.
After defeating Sydney 2-1 in the first leg, Melbourne were in a strong position to progress to the 2010 Grand Final. That position got even better, very early on in the match. On 15 minutes Robbie Kruse hit a superb shot into the top right corner of the goal, giving the keeper no chance.
Although stunned, Sydney managed to regroup and get themselves back into the game scoring in the 36th minute via a fairly weak penalty. Not long after the re-start Mark Bridge had found the back of the net to put Sydney in front on the day but level on aggregate.
Melbourne would have the last laugh. As the game went to extra time they continued to push, and got their reward in the 114th minute. In classic Victory style Muscat and Thompson combined to go ahead on aggregate and win the home Grand Final advantage.
The quick free kick was taken by Muscat and Thompson was on the end of it to send the ball home. Sydney were dumbstruck and Victory fans everywhere we going crazy with excitement. A classic Victory moment that I’ll never forget.
